Overview of Procedures for PAT Portable Appliance Testing
1. Visual Inspection
A visual inspection of the appliance shall be carried out prior to any PAT testing. The inspection will take into effect the following items:
- Flex – Is it in good condition (free from cuts, fraying or damage.
- Plug – Is the flexible cable secure in its anchorage? Is it free from any sign of overheating? Is it free from cracks or damage?
- Socket outlet – Is there any sign of overheating? Is it free from cracks or damage?
- The appliance – Does it work? Does it switch on and off properly? Is it free from damage to the case or damage that could result in access to live parts? Can it be safely used?
2. PAT Testing
Subject to satisfactory inspection, the following sequence of tests will then be carried out:
- Earth continuity test – Class 1 appliances only
- Insulation resistance test
- Touch current leakage test
- Functional test
- Polarity test (leads only)
Precautions: The engineer will require all IT users to log off in order to avoid accidental data loss.
The IEE Code of Practice states that the person carrying out the inspection and PAT testing must be competent.
